The Limousine and Taxi Commission organise a series of award every year for limousine chauffeurs and taxi drivers who have gone to extraordinary lengths for their passengers. While the role of a chauffeur is to be prepared for anything, limousine chauffeurs are often put in the situation where their quick and brave actions can help many people and save many lives.

For example, the limousine driver who won the 2007 Driver of the Year award very likely saved the life of one of his passengers. On a hot and muggy night, Charles Kabbani from Staten Island was sent out in his black Lincoln Town Car to pick up a passenger. After picking up the woman, she told him she was feeling cold, and could he turn off the air conditioning and hold her hand.

The woman’s destination was Grand Central Terminal and as Mr Kabbani drove her in that direction, he continued to chat with her to make her feel more comfortable. However, when the conversation stopped the chauffeur looked in his rear view mirror and saw his passenger flailing her arms, see her eyes rolled back in her head and could hear her making gurgling noises as though she were chocking.

Luckily before Mr Kabbani was a limousine chauffeur he had worked with another woman who had had a seizure and he knew exactly what was happening to his passenger and what he had to do. Also lucky was the fact that Mr Kabbani stocked his limousine with a heavy duty plastic ruler to allow him to keep his paperwork neat and after positioning his passenger on the floor of the limousine’s passenger area, he used the ruler to pull out his passenger’s tongue.

However, while the immediate crisis was averted, Mr Kabbani still had to get his passenger to the hospital without her chocking on her tongue or on the ruler. So he drove with one hand, the other reaching around to keep the ruler in place.

Mr Kabbani’s efforts were rewarded and of course appreciated and he was said to have shown ‘the year’s most outstanding representation of professionalism’.
